Idle Cycles is an independent, unofficial publication. It is not operated, endorsed, sponsored or reviewed by the Winhance project, by its developer memstechtips, or by Microsoft Corporation.
This site is editorial. No software is hosted, mirrored, repackaged, bundled or otherwise made available here, and no page directs readers to a source for obtaining any program. Nothing published here should be read as an instruction to install anything. Where an article describes a program, it describes my own experience of using it on my own equipment.
Trademarks
Windows, Windows 10, Windows 11, Microsoft Edge, OneDrive, Copilot and Microsoft Store are trademarks or registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. Winhance and WIMUtil are the names of their respective projects. All are used here descriptively, to identify the software being written about, in the ordinary sense of fair use. No claim of ownership, endorsement or partnership is made or implied.
Technical risk
Articles here describe changing Windows settings, editing the registry, removing built-in applications and building custom installation media. These actions can:
- break applications that depend on removed components, sometimes days later;
- remove features that cannot be reinstalled on that Windows installation;
- cause data loss if a step is performed incorrectly;
- leave a system that will not boot, requiring reinstallation.
Back up your data before you begin, create a restore point, and test on a machine you can afford to rebuild. You are responsible for what happens on your own systems. Where a machine belongs to an employer or client, get their agreement in writing first.
Accuracy and currency
Registry paths, setting names and behaviors change between Windows builds and editions. An article that was accurate on the day it was written may be wrong six months later. Publication dates are shown on every article for exactly that reason.
Screens, values and results described here come from my own machines. Your hardware, edition, drivers and workload differ, so your results will too. Performance figures are single-machine measurements, clearly labeled as such, and are not benchmarks in any formal sense.
Not professional advice
Nothing here is professional IT, security, legal or financial advice, and reading it does not create any advisory or contractual relationship. For business-critical systems, regulated environments or anything under a support contract, consult a qualified professional who can see the actual system.
External links and advertising
Links to third-party websites are provided for convenience and do not constitute endorsement of their content, products or practices. I have no control over what those sites publish or how they handle your data.
This site may display advertising served by third-party networks. Advertisements are selected by the network, not by me, and their appearance next to an article is not a recommendation. No advertiser has any influence over what is written, and no payment has been accepted in exchange for coverage, reviews, mentions or links. Any future commercial arrangement will be disclosed clearly on the affected page.
