Who is responsible
Idle Cycles is a personal publication operated by an individual, not a company. Where data protection law requires a controller to be named, that individual is the controller for personal data processed through this website.

What is collected
Information you give me. If you email me or use the contact form, I receive your name, email address and whatever you write. The contact form does not submit to a server on this site — it opens your own email client — so that message reaches me the same way any email does.
Information collected automatically. Like every website, the hosting server records technical data in access logs: IP address, date and time, the page requested, referring page, browser and operating system version. This is used to keep the site running and to investigate abuse.
Information stored in your browser. Your cookie choice, your light or dark theme preference, and, if you allow them, analytics and advertising identifiers set by third parties. See the cookie policy for the full list.
I do not run accounts, do not sell products, do not operate a newsletter, and do not ask for payment information. There is nothing here to register for.
Why it is processed, and the legal basis
| Purpose | Data | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Serving pages and keeping the site available | Server logs, necessary cookies | Legitimate interests |
| Security, abuse and fraud prevention | Server logs | Legitimate interests |
| Remembering your cookie and theme choices | Local browser storage | Legitimate interests / strictly necessary |
| Understanding which articles are read | Analytics cookies | Consent |
| Displaying advertising, including personalized ads | Advertising cookies and identifiers | Consent |
| Replying to your message | Contact details you send | Legitimate interests / consent |
Where the basis is consent, you can withdraw it at any time using the cookie settings link in the footer, without affecting processing that already happened.
Advertising
This site may display advertising served by third-party ad networks. Ad networks and their partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads, measure whether they were seen, and in some cases to personalize what you are shown based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
If a Google advertising product is used, Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this and other sites. You can opt out of personalized advertising through Google's Ads Settings. Third-party vendors and networks generally offer their own opt-outs, and a consolidated list is available at optout.aboutads.info, optout.networkadvertising.org and, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.
Advertising cookies are not set on this site unless you allow them in the consent banner. Rejecting them means you may still see ads, but they will not be personalized using cookies set here.
I do not share your personal data with advertisers, do not sell data, and receive only aggregate reporting from any ad network — impressions and revenue, not lists of people.
Third parties involved
- Hosting provider. Stores and serves the files, and keeps access logs. Acts as a processor.
- Google Fonts. Typefaces are requested from Google's font servers, which means your IP address is visible to Google when a page loads. If you prefer to avoid this, the fonts can be self-hosted — see the note in the site's README.
- Analytics provider (only with consent). Aggregated page view statistics.
- Advertising network (only with consent). Ad delivery and measurement.
Some of these providers operate outside the UK and EEA. Where that happens, transfers rely on the provider's standard contractual clauses or an adequacy decision. Their own privacy policies govern what they do with data they collect.
How long things are kept
Server access logs: typically up to 30 days, then deleted or anonymised by the host. Emails you send me: kept while the conversation is useful and then deleted, normally within 24 months. Consent records stored in your browser: 12 months, after which the banner asks again. Third-party cookie lifetimes are set by those third parties and listed in the cookie policy.
Your rights
United States
If you live in California, you have the right to know what personal information is collected about you, to request its deletion, to correct it, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas and other states with comparable laws have equivalent rights.
I do not sell personal information for money. Allowing advertising cookies may still count as "sharing" under California law, so rejecting them in the consent banner — or reopening it from the footer link — is how you exercise the opt-out here. Global Privacy Control signals sent by your browser are honored as an opt-out request. Exercising any of these rights will never result in different or worse treatment on this site.
Europe, the United Kingdom and comparable regimes
If you are in the EEA, the UK or another region with comparable law, you have the right to request access to your personal data, correction of inaccurate data, deletion, restriction of processing, portability, and to object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw it at any time, and you may lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.
How to ask
Email hello@theidlecycles.com with "Privacy request" in the subject line and tell me what you want done. I respond within 45 days, and sooner in practice. I may ask you to confirm details that let me match the request to the data actually held, which for most visitors is nothing more than a server log entry.
Children
This site is written for adults administering their own computers and is not directed at children under 16. I do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent me personal information, contact me and I will delete it.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS and consists of static files — there is no database, no login and no user-generated content stored here, which removes entire categories of risk. That does not make it invulnerable, and no method of transmission over the internet is completely secure.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes and a short note describing the change is added here. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy. This version: August 12, 2026.
